Monochrome Menace: The Widebody '89 Mercedes 190E Built for the Boulevard
What’s up, Project190. Let me introduce you to the new standard.
They say perfection is subjective, but it’s hard to argue with a post-facelift W201 sitting exactly how it was always meant to. This is my 1990 190E 2.6, finished in immaculate Signal Red (568). I picked this up from the original owner in 2023, and with only 70,000 original miles on the clock, she practically still smells like Stuttgart in the 90s.
I wanted a build that pays respect to the chassis’ legendary DTM heritage while injecting a heavy dose of that Japanese VIP/Bippu aesthetic. So, instead of the usual wheel choices, she’s sitting on staggered 17″ Zauber three-piece wheels wrapped in Yokohama ADVAN Flevas. Paired with a MacPherson strut front, a five-link rear, and dropped on H&R springs, the stance is dialed aggressive, tight, and completely unapologetic.
To complete the exterior, I went with a custom body kit, a three-piece rear spoiler, and full Euro-spec headlights and front indicators to clean up the front end. It still rocks the iconic single panoramic wiper and deep-ribbed taillights, because you don’t mess with the classics.
Inside, it’s pure time-capsule luxury with an edge. The Cream Beige MB-Tex and Zebrano wood trim look like they haven’t aged a day since 1990. The crown jewel of the cabin, though, is the AMG Italvolanti steering wheel. When you’re gripping that, looking past the 7k-rpm tach, with the 2.6L inline-six doing its thing through the four-speed auto, you know exactly what kind of machine you’re piloting.
She’s fully loaded with a power sunroof, automatic climate control (blowing ice cold), and a modernized JVC Bluetooth stereo hidden in the mix.
